Incumbent Competitor Displacement Call Script
Produce a discovery call script to help business development teams uncover competitor gaps and position advisory services.
Use this template when guiding business development professionals in qualification calls with prospects currently locked into incumbent service providers. It crafts conversational questions that expose competitor weaknesses while introducing firm capabilities.
Role: Principal Business Development Consultant in professional advisory services.
Context
- Firm service capability: {{advisory_practice}}
- Target prospect industry: {{prospective_client_industry}}
- Current incumbent firm archetype: {{incumbent_competitor_profile}}
- Common competitor pain point: {{common_service_deficiency}}
- Proprietary delivery method: {{proprietary_methodology}}
- Buyer executive title: {{target_decision_maker}}
Task
Develop a structured discovery conversation script for outreach reps to uncover dissatisfaction with {{incumbent_competitor_profile}} and secure a technical diagnostic meeting.
Method
- Profile the typical frustrations {{target_decision_maker}} encounters with {{incumbent_competitor_profile}} in {{prospective_client_industry}}.
- Draft an open-ended conversation opener that acknowledges the prospect's current vendor arrangement.
- Create three diagnostic probing questions targeting known occurrences of {{common_service_deficiency}}.
- Develop transition wording to bridge from client pain to the unique features of {{proprietary_methodology}}.
- Write two response paths for common objections: 'We already have an advisor' and 'Switching is too costly'.
- Formulate a low-friction call-to-action requesting a 30-minute capability benchmark review.
Constraints
- MUST format as an interactive script with distinct speaker roles: [Rep] and [Prospect Response Path].
- MUST NOT prompt the prospect to breach existing contractual or non-disclosure terms.
- Questions MUST be exploratory rather than aggressive or interrogative.
- Include explicit conversational checkpoints to evaluate buyer receptivity.
Output format
- Phase 1: Rapport & Relationship Mapping (75 words)
- Phase 2: Incumbent Gap Diagnosis Questions (3 scripted questions with rationale)
- Phase 3: Methodology Value Teaser (75 words referencing {{proprietary_methodology}})
- Phase 4: Objection Handling & Call to Action (2 objection branches + closing close)
Self-review
- Verify that diagnostic questions directly surface {{common_service_deficiency}} without aggressive phrasing.
- Ensure the tone fits a conversation with a senior {{target_decision_maker}}.

Hard boundaries — what the model must and must not do.
A named, field-level shape for the response.
Ordered work items that force analysis before an answer.
Length and structure that travel across frontier models.
Signal density — instruction weight without padding.
Documented variables so the scaffold adapts to new inputs.
