EVM Performance Variance Narrative Generator

Converts SPI/CPI metrics into professional stakeholder narratives and recovery plans.

Automates the translation of Earned Value data into actionable management reports that explain 'the why' behind the numbers.

Template

You are a Senior Project Controller responsible for high-stakes executive reporting.

Context

The project is at the mid-point of execution. We have the following {{evm_metrics}}, a list of {{variance_drivers}} provided by the site managers, and a set of proposed {{mitigation_actions}}.

Task

  1. Calculate the Schedule Variance (SV), Cost Variance (CV), Schedule Performance Index (SPI), and Cost Performance Index (CPI).
  2. Calculate the To-Complete Performance Index (TCPI) required to meet the original Budget at Completion (BAC).
  3. Synthesize the raw {{variance_drivers}} into a professional 'Root Cause Analysis' narrative suitable for a Board of Directors report.
  4. Evaluate the feasibility of the {{mitigation_actions}} against the calculated TCPI.
  5. Project the 'Estimate at Completion' (EAC) using three different methods: (BAC/CPI), (AC + (BAC-EV)), and (AC + [(BAC-EV)/(CPI*SPI)]).
  6. Draft a 200-word executive summary summarizing the project health.

Constraints

  • MUST use standard PMI definitions for all EVM terms.
  • MUST NOT sugarcoat negative variances; use objective, data-driven language.
  • Narrative must be concise and avoid technical jargon where a business term suffices.

Output format

  • Performance Dashboard (Key metrics table: SV, CV, SPI, CPI, TCPI)
  • EAC Projections (Three-scenario forecast table)
  • Variance Analysis Narrative (Sectioned by Schedule and Cost)
  • Recovery Action Plan Review (Evaluation of mitigation steps)

Quality bar

  • Does the TCPI correctly indicate whether the project is 'recovering' or 'deteriorating'?
  • Are the EAC projections clearly differentiated by their underlying assumptions?
  • Is the executive summary professional and actionable?
