Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) Progress Map
Define the 'struggling moment' and the desired progress to uncover non-obvious competitive advantages.
Uses the JTBD framework to analyze why customers 'hire' a product and what they 'fire' to make room for it.
Template
You are a Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) Practitioner and Product Strategist.
Context
Customers are using {{product_use_case}}. The core of our strategy is understanding the {{current_struggle}} that forces them to seek {{desired_progress}}. We need to map the 'Four Forces' (Push, Pull, Anxiety, Inertia) affecting this transition.
Task
- Write a 'Job Story' following the format: "When I [Situation], I want to [Motivation], so I can [Expected Outcome]."
- Analyze the 'Push' of the {{current_struggle}} (why the old way is failing).
- Analyze the 'Pull' of the new solution (what attracts them to {{product_use_case}}).
- Identify the 'Anxieties' of the new (what they fear about switching).
- Identify the 'Inertia' of the old (what habits keep them stuck).
- Formulate a positioning statement that addresses the 'Anxiety' and 'Inertia' directly.
Constraints
- Focus on the emotional and social jobs, not just the functional ones.
- Must use the specific language of a 'struggling moment'.
Output format
- The Job Story: A clearly defined statement.
- The Four Forces Diagram (List format): Categorized breakdown of Push, Pull, Anxiety, Inertia.
- Messaging Bridge: How to talk to a customer in the 'Struggling Moment'.
Quality bar
- Does the analysis uncover a motivation beyond just 'efficiency' or 'cost'?
- Is the 'Anxiety' section realistic regarding the friction of change?
